Over the last five years the concept of sustainability has moved from a commendable ideal to a fundamental pillar of corporate responsibility. At Wood and Disney, we’ve witnessed firsthand the increased need for businesses, both large and small, to understand and actively manage their environmental impact. Central to this is carbon accounting – a meticulous practice that helps organisations to accurately measure, track, and ultimately reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Carbon accounting isn’t merely about fulfilling a regulatory requirement or ticking a corporate social responsibility box; it’s about gaining a clear, data-driven understanding of your operational footprint. Much like financial accounting provides a precise and comprehensive picture of a company’s financial health, carbon accounting offers an equally critical and indispensable insight into its environmental performance. This data allows businesses to precisely identify “hotspots” of emissions – areas where their operations are most carbon-intensive. Armed with this knowledge, they can then prioritise actions, develop effective strategies for decarbonisation, and allocate resources efficiently. The overarching goal is to go beyond environmental aspirations and translate them into concrete, measurable, and impactful progress that makes a difference.
At Wood and Disney, we firmly believe that for carbon accounting to be truly effective, the data generated must possess several key characteristics: it must be accurate, it needs to be real-time, and it must be replicable, ensuring consistency and comparability over time. This data needs to be relevant to your specific business operations, enabling you to craft action plans that genuinely address and mitigate your environmental impact. Furthermore, this information should be easily understandable and accessible to every member of your team. This fosters a collective commitment to sustainability and empowers employees to contribute to the company’s environmental goals. Crucially, an effective carbon accounting system must also be affordable, ensuring that environmental initiatives are not seen as a prohibitive cost but rather as an investment that delivers long-term value.
Wood and Disney are so committed to the transformative value of carbon accounting that we decided to put our own practice to the ultimate test by serving as the “guinea pig” for our very first carbon accounting exercise. For our financial year ended 31 March 2024, our overall carbon footprint was 31.4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. When broken down per employee, this equated to 3.5 tonnes of CO2 per individual. Through a rigorous internal review of our operations, and the invaluable support of our solutions partner, Trace, we achieved a truly significant and commendable 19.9% reduction in our carbon footprint in the subsequent year. For the year ended 31 March 2025, our total footprint was brought down to only 25.2 tonnes, a remarkable achievement given that we not only grew our business but also took on an additional employee. This translated to just 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per employee a reduction of 1 tonne over the year. This tangible and verifiable success story within our own operations underscores our belief in the power of proactive carbon management and the proven effectiveness of our approach. It demonstrates that with the right tools and a committed strategy, significant reductions are not only possible but achievable within a relatively short timeframe.
The benefits of embracing carbon accounting extend far beyond the immediate positive impact on the environment. For businesses themselves, it can lead to substantial financial benefits, including significant cost savings by enhancing energy efficiency, optimising scarce resources, and reducing waste. It also enhances brand reputation and market standing, attracting environmentally conscious consumers, and highly talented employees who are increasingly seeking out companies aligned with sustainable values. Moreover, as regulatory frameworks tighten and supply chain sustainability reporting requirements become increasingly stringent across industries, robust carbon accounting ensures seamless compliance and strategically positions businesses for future growth and competitive advantage.
In essence, carbon accounting is no longer a niche concern confined to environmental campaigners; it’s an indispensable strategy for every forward-thinking business in the 21st century. It provides the clarity, precision, and actionable insights necessary to effectively navigate the complex path toward a more sustainable, resilient, and ultimately prosperous future. By wholeheartedly embracing carbon accounting, businesses can not only significantly reduce their environmental impact but also unlock entirely new opportunities for innovation, drive operational efficiencies, and secure long-term success in a world that is increasingly valuing and demanding environmental responsibility.
